Enhance Your Teeth with Cosmetic Dentistry

What is cosmetic dentistry? Cosmetic dentistry refers to dental treatments that restore the look of your smile or improve on the function you already have.

Teeth whitening is the simplest cosmetic treatment. Tooth whitening is used to remove or dampen the effect of staining by making your teeth as white as possible for years to come. Dental whitening takes about two hours to do in office.

Braces are perhaps the best known cosmetic treatment, as they straighten out the teeth and make sure they’re correctly spaced to provide maximum function and a healthy smile. Braces can take months to years for a final result. Usually the patient will need to visit the dental office every 3 weeks for maintenance.

Cosmetic fillings are used to fill areas of the tooth that have had cavities. Cosmetic fillings are matched to your tooth’s color for an even color. It is recommended that tooth fillings be replaced every 7-12 years. Other fillings, such as ceramic fillings, tend to last longer at an average of 15 years and resist staining. Dental fillings are a quick procedure that is a two step process. First the dentist typically applies localized anesthetic to the tooth that will be filled. Next, the dentist removes the portion of the tooth that has decayed. Afterwards, the portion that was removed will be filled with a cosmetic filling. The patient should not feel much discomfort and will be able to continue their daily routine after the procedure.

Another dental procedure that is involved with dental restoration is known as composite bonding, and consists of applying a layer of composite material that is shaped and sculpted on the surface of your tooth and then hardened. Like veneers, bonding will also add years to the life of your teeth. Composite bonding helps correct misshaped teeth such as chipped teeth or irregular shaped teeth. It is a process where composite is attached to the tooth’s surface. The composite resin is matched to your teeth’s natural color so that no one will know the difference.

Veneers are thin porcelain shells that bond to and cover the front of your teeth to improve their appearance. They’re great for restoring the look and function of broken, chipped, discolored, or uneven teeth or teeth that have gaps between them. They may also be used when you have fillings that don’t match the natural color of your teeth.

If you have missing teeth due to injury or extractions, then you should consider your options to replacing the look and function of those missing teeth. Here your options include: bridges, implants and full or partial dentures.
