Regular preventative exams and cleanings not only keep your child’s smile clean and white, but also teaches them good self-care that will help them throughout their whole life. We recommend exams and cleanings twice a year to maintain your child’s dental health. And, our dentists specialize in the care of children, making it a fun and educational experience for them. You don’t have to worry about a scary experience for your children at the Family Dental Centers in Wheaton and Gaithersburg, MD.

Even the best tooth brushing techniques at home will never be able to get rid of all the plaque that builds up on your child’s teeth, so regular cleanings at our office are very important. During the teeth cleaning, our hygienist will gently scrape and scrub any tartar and plaque off of your child’s teeth using a variety of tools. This will prevent further buildup of plaque for months at a time. In addition, the hygienist may apply a fluoride treatment to further prevent decay until your child’s next treatment.

Starting from the age of 6, your child will be getting their premolar teeth (back teeth). We may recommend dental sealants—a coating helps prevent decay. Your child will grow these important “grinding” teeth until about the age of 12 (when the second molars start coming in).  It’s very important to keep your regular dental appointments with your dentist so that as soon as each tooth grows in, your dentist can apply the sealant. This reduces the chances of getting cavities tremendously.

The next step that is essential to making sure your child’s teeth are in tip top shape is a preventative exam. During a comprehensive preventative dental exam, each side of each and every tooth is examined for signs of decay or other problems. In addition, the gums are examined to determine if there are any early signs of gum disease. We may also take x-rays, to make sure your child’s teeth are healthy inside as well outside.
